description A study is performed on the capability of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to detect highly ionising particles (HIPs) that are produced in pp collision at the TeV mass scale. This project focused on the search for magnetic monopoles and includes the full run-2 data sample for the final results. This project extends on a study made using the 2016 data sample. Currently in this search, the two discriminating parameters which are combined to identify monopole candidates are $dE/dx_{Sig}$ (which is a combination of saturated silicon strips and a fraction of unsaturated strips); and Calorimetry $F51$ (a topological cluster shape variable which is the fraction of energy in the central strip of the cluster). This project presents a study which aims to introduce the ECAL’s time component in this search, which can be measured with a resolution better than 1 ns. The study concludes by proving that due to the broad time distribution of spike, it is difficult to consider time as a discriminating parameter. The study also investigates in detail the monopole reconstruction efficiency in Monte Carlo simulation though visual inspection.
