Introduction to Dark Matter Searches at CERN

The nature of dark matter as of now is unknown. If dark matter is made of particles, what these particles are and how they communicate with the known particles i.e. the Standard Model, are some of the questions the scientists are after. To answer these questions a variety of experiments are being carried out at CERN and worldwide. This chapter introduces basic concepts illustrating evidences of dark matter, the associated theoretical landscape, and corresponding experimental searches. In particular, it focuses on searches being carried out at CERN. The chapter contains some mathematical details as well as aims to explain concepts in simple words.
