description | Cooperation of NTUA and CERN for the Future Circular Collider : The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) participates in experiments at CERN, mainly through the Experimental Particle Physics group of the Physics Department of the School of Applied and Physical Sciences, for about 50 years training many young scientists who currently hold positions in university and research institutions in Greece and abroad. For the past twenty years or so the group has been actively involved in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments that led to the discovery of the Ηiggs boson in 2012. CERN has begun to look into the possibility of a Future Circular Collider (FCC). For the construction of the FCC it will be necessary to build a new tunnel (4 times larger than the LHC) while its construction and operation involves a number of technological challenges in the various fields of engineering. NTUA has already the necessary expertise in its schools and participates in the context of these studies. For this reason, the Rector of the NTUA, Prof. A. Boudouvis, visited CERN and signed the cooperation protocol for the participation of the NTUA in the design studies of the FCC and he was given a tour of the facilities of the most modern research center in the world together with the NTUA Profs. Y. Tsipolitis and A. Kehagias. |
