Sumario: | With the dose equivalent rates at aircraft altitudes typically being a few microsievert per hour, the International Commission of Radiological Protection recommended at the beginning of the 1990s that aircraft crew should be considered as occupationally exposed. In fact, such dose rate levels can easily lead to annual doses exceeding 1 mSv, values which are, for example, rarely reached around high-energy accelerators. Numerous studies have been performed since then and a wealth of data, both measured and calculated exist. In addition, software tools have been developed that parameterise these data and return route doses for given flight profiles and dates. As events leading to significant, unplanned exposure cannot occur in the atmosphere, such tools replace personal dosemeters and are commonly used for many years in the routine dose assessment. |
