But what about technology that is ‘big’, or what we refer to as monolithic technology, which is difficult to upgrade once built, cannot be tested as a whole prior to actual operation, is difficult to move because of its size and is seen as prototypes until the technology is used (e.g., nuclear power plants, space shuttles). To explore this puzzle, we investigate the 2008 breakdown of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN) .
