Sumario:This document details proposed measures designed to contain the cost of hospital treatment reimbursed by the CERN Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS). The CERN Health Insurance Supervisory Board (CHIS Board) is proposing that the free choice of health care provider be accompanied by measures that will allow insured members to be directed towards providers approved by the CHIS, where their rates are competitive (specialist literature on this subject generally describes such providers as "preferred providers"). Given that hospital treatment constitutes the main item of expenditure for the CHIS, it is proposed that new reimbursement rules be introduced in this area. These proposals were discussed and endorsed at TREF on 17 September, as reported by the Chairman of TREF to the Finance Committee on 18 September. They are now presented by the Management to the Finance Committee prior to submission to the Council for approval in December this year, so that the new reimbursement rules would enter into force on 1 January 2003.
