First beam ejected from the PS.

At the beginning, the PS operated with internal targets. To avoid the radiation problems with increasing PS beam intensity, and to permit the use of primary protons, kickers and septum magnets were developed to eject the beam from the PS to external targets. When this was performed for the first time in 1963, the ejected beam passed through the open air and was made visible by scintillators placed along its path.
