Search for structure in the mass region 2220 to 2240 $MeV/c^{2}$ in a $\overline{p} p \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$, $\eta \pi^{0}$, $\eta \eta$ formation experiment

Sumario: | Results of a search for narrow resonances in a pp formation experiment with the Crystal Barrel Detector at LEAR are presented. The cross sections for pp to pi /sup 0/ pi /sup 0/, eta pi /sup 0/ and eta eta are determined for annihilation at 9 momenta in the region square root (s)=2222-2240 MeV/c/sup 2/. No indication for the formation of a xi (2230) is found. Breit-Wigner fits, assuming a resonance width of 5-20 MeV/c/sup 2/, yield the upper limits B(pp to xi )B( xi to pi /sup 0/ pi /sup 0/)<(7.5-5).10/sup -5/ and B(pp to xi )B( xi to eta eta )<(3.0-2.2).10/sup -5/ at 95L.
