The impact of the TIC on the physics performance of NA44

In 1993, the NA44 collaboration built a threshold imaging Cherenkov detector (TIC) as part of an upgrade program for the 158 A GeV lead beam at the CERN SPS. The device was successfully operated from 1994 to 1996, and allowed track-by-track identification of up to five particles in the 3-8 GeV/e ran...

Sumario:In 1993, the NA44 collaboration built a threshold imaging Cherenkov detector (TIC) as part of an upgrade program for the 158 A GeV lead beam at the CERN SPS. The device was successfully operated from 1994 to 1996, and allowed track-by-track identification of up to five particles in the 3-8 GeV/e range. In this paper, we review published physics results of NA44 that rely on the high pi /K-separation power of the TIC. (21 refs).
