Sumario:We discuss the basic work principle of spark counters with localized discharge. A review of the main counter characteristics as well as results of recent R and D is presented. Possible large scale applications for the investigation of ion-ion collisions are discussed: FOPI- a 4 pi detector at the SIS accelerator of GSI, Darmstadt; NA49-a fixed target experiment at the CERN-SPS; ALICE-a dedicated heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
