Sumario:The standard model of elementary particle physics predicts and requires the existence of a neutral scalar Higgs boson. Recent fits to electroweak data suggest that it may be visible at current LEP energies. Searches for Higgs production at LEP at center of mass energies up to 183 GeV have been performed, and a combined limit on the mass of the Higgs boson is set at 89.8 GeV/c/sup 2/ at 95% CL. Preliminary searches for the Higgs boson at center of mass energy 189 GeV are also examined. (15 refs).
