To evaluate the response of the detector in the IHC background environment, the neutron energy spectrum expected in the CMS muon barrel has been taken into account; a hit rate due to neutrons of about 0.6 Hz cm/sup -2/ has been estimated for a 250*250 cm/sup 2/ RPC in the RB1 station.
