Study of $J/\psi$ suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN SPS
We report on a search for a phase transition from ordinary nuclear matter to a state of deconfined quarks and gluons as predicted by lattice QCD calculations. Sumario: | We report on a search for a phase transition from ordinary nuclear matter to a state of deconfined quarks and gluons as predicted by lattice QCD calculations. One of the most clean signatures of this state of matter is predicted to be the suppression of the J/$\psi$ production. The NA50 experiment measures, at CERN SPS, the dimuon production in Pb-Pb collisions at an incident momentum of 158 GeV /c per nucleon. The J/$\psi$ production, detected via its decay into muon pairs, is studied as a function of the centrality of the collision. For peripheral collisions the J/$\psi$ production cross section can be described in terms of nuclear absorption, inferred from numerous measurements extending from p-p to S-U. The central events show an anomalous suppression, which cannot be described by models based on hadronic scenarios. Latest results on these measurements are reported. (7 refs). |
