The specifications for the amplifier are listed. The technical risk factors and achievable performance for several distinct configurations, including coaxial and cylindrical cavities interacting at the fundamental and second harmonic of the cyclotron frequency, were investigated in the study. Following detailed physics designs of several different circuits and electron guns, a fundamental TE/sub 011/ coaxial mode configuration was selected as the most likely to achieve the specifications. Design details and performance predictions for this configuration are given.
