Sumario:A complete analytic treatment of the electron cloud phenomenon is given starting from the ionisation of the rest-gas and including the derivation of the acceleration of electrons in the electric field of Gaussian bunches. The multipacting threshold conditions for bunch trains with finite length are derived as well as the energy spectrum of the secondary electrons and the power deposition in the vacuum chamber. The case of the electron cloud in the presence of a transverse magnetic dipole field is merely treated in a qualitative manner. The examples shown are relevant for the SPS. Extrapolation to the LHC is trivial.
