description It has been suggested that a 1/R addition to the gravitational Lagrangian could be the source of the observed late-time cosmological acceleration. By itself this term is ruled out by constraints on scalar-tensor gravity, but the addition of extra contributions of the form R^p makes it possible to evade these constraints. We discuss the general conditions for such theories to be viable, and identify the least unnatural candidates.

It was argued that increasing F' would reduce the strength of the scalar coupling to matter. This argument failed to realize that the gravitational coupling to matter is controlled by the same power of F', hence the scalar always couples with the same strength as gravity.CERN-TH-2003-174astro-ph/0307423CERN-TH-2003-174oai:cds.cern.ch:6302112003-07-24
