Error Detection for the Serial Data of the Level-1 Calorimeter Trigger

This note describes a software model of calorimeter trigger data transmission, from which the relationship between bit- or burst-error rates and the likely fake trigger rate can be estimated. description This note describes a software model of calorimeter trigger data transmission, from which the relationship between bit- or burst-error rates and the likely fake trigger rate can be estimated. The mode is used to evaluate the performanceof a number of simple parity-check error-detection schemes. A target upperlimit of 1% of the level-1 trigger rate arising from fake triggers can be met by a bit-error rate per channel (berfor error suppression) of 10^-9 or below. Theserial transmission technologies selected by the calorimeter trigger are likely toimprove upon this BER limit by several orders of magnitude.
