Sumario:In this presentation, I report on the suitability of the CMS ( Compact Muon Solenoid) detector for the study of heavy ion collisions at the CERN LHC. This detector, designed for pp physics, can beused for the search for the phasetransition from nuclear matter to aquark-gluon plasma predicted by lattice QCD calculations. In particular, the production of the Y family mesons, the characteristics of the jets and the distribution of the energy flow emitted in the interaction can be measured as a function of the collision impact parameter for different incident nuclei.
