description Results on the simulation of the longitudinal uniformity of light collection in PbWO4 crystals are presented. The effects of the longitudinal variation on the energy resolution and on the low energy tail of the reconstructed energy distribution are investigated. It is found that the uniformity in the region of the shower maximum is rather tightly constrained if the resulting contribution to the energy resolution is required to be small. It is also found that an increase in response towards the back of the crystal can compensate for rear leakage of late developing showers, and reduce the low energy tail due to longitudinal shower leakage.
