The results show that with a radiator having 50% larger thickness than the 10 mm so far adopted, the detector can be operated at a gain reduced by the same factor, thus decreasing the photon feedback background and improving the stability of operation in presence of heavily ionizing events. In addition, the use of a low gain has the remarkable advantage of providing a reserve of photoelectrons which could be exploited by increasing the gain, in the case of a degradation of the CsI photocathodes quantum efficiency.</P></BODY> </HTML> |
