description The room temperature magnetic measurements of the first series-design prototypes of the LHC main quadrupoles are analysed. Field shape harmonics for the nominal design are worked out using numerical simulations. Data relative to six apertures (three quadrupoles) are considered. The averages of the multipoles are interpreted as the systematic components. The agreement with the nominal design is verified, and possible explanations for discrepancies are worked out. An offset in b6 of around 2.4 units is observed, and can be justified in terms of a coil azimuthal length larger than the nominal value by about 0.1 mm. Standard deviations of the multipoles are interpreted as the random components. We show that the latter can be in-terpreted in terms of random movements of around 25-35 µm r.m.s. of the coil blocks, because of components and assembly tolerances. A good correlation between measurements made on collared coil and the assembled cold mass is found. Comparison with target values for beam dynamics is given.
