Sumario:A diagnostic system is proposed to monitor the beam dilution profile at the entrance of the LHC main beam dump. The monitor exploits two different types of optical photon emission: (a) luminescence on an alumina screen in the case of normal or partial beam dilution; (b) optical transition radiation by a carbon plate in case of a total dilution failure. Based on the analyses, this system is able to resolve with sufficient accuracy the beam location and to resist the beam load under any operating condition. An effective optical set-up of the beam imaging system is also proposed, providing a preliminary design of the diagnostic station.
