Intra Beam Scattering with Lead Ions in the SPS First experiment

Sumario: | Lead ion beams were kept circulating during extended injection coast, gamma = 5.54. The lifetime of the debunched beams were in the order of 0.5 hour. The lifetime of the bunched beam intensity was only 60 sec of less. Good quality wire scans were taken, but a large scatter between IN/OUT scans was noted. The emittance evolution of the unbunched beam is surprising: The larger horizontal emittance increases while the smaller vertical one decreases condiderably! Further tests are proposed with protons at 14 GeV/c. |
