A Brief Introduction to the Multiwire Proportional Chambers in the AD

Gaseous detectors exploit the ionisation produced by a charged particle as it passes through matter. When a charged particle passes through a gas, free electrons and positive ions are produced along its track. If no electric field is applied, ion pairs will recombine, and no signal is produced. By a...

description Gaseous detectors exploit the ionisation produced by a charged particle as it passes through matter. When a charged particle passes through a gas, free electrons and positive ions are produced along its track. If no electric field is applied, ion pairs will recombine, and no signal is produced. By applying different electric strength fields, different types of detector can be used. A development of proportional chambers is to place many detectors in the same gas volume. The Gas filled Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers in the AD are used to measure the beam profile and the beam position in the horizontal and vertical planes in the common extraction line and of the 4 Beamlines, DEM, ASACUSA, ATRAP and ATHENA.
