description | The Quench Protection System (QPS) is the sole system in the Large Hadron Collider machine monitoring the signals from the superconducting elements (bus bars, current leads, magnets) which form the cold part of the electrical circuits. The basic functions to be accomplished by the QPS during the machine operation will be briefly presented. With more than 4000 internal trigger channels (quench detectors and others), the final QPS design is the result of an optimised balance between on-demand availability and false quench reliability. The built-in redundancy for the different equipment will be presented, focusing on the calculated, expected number of missed quenches and false quenches. Maintenance strategies in order to improve the performance over the years of operation will be addressed. |
