Sumario: | In order to use observations of the anisotropy and polarization of the cosmic microwave background to learn about inflation, it is necessary to rely on conservation laws that apply outside the horizon. The general conservation law for both scalar and tensor modes is derived as a version of Goldstone's theorem. The damping of tensor modes after they re-enter the horizon is calculated. |
