description The LHCb experiment is a single-arm magnetic spectrometer. Silicon microstrip detectors are employed in a significant fraction of the tracking system. The Vertex Locator consists of 21 detector stations that operate inside the LHC beam pipe and are separated from the beam vacuum by a thin aluminium foil. The Silicon Tracker is a large-surface silicon micro-strip detector that covers the full acceptance of the experiment in a single tracking station upstream of the spectrometer magnet and the inner-most part of three tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The design of the LHCb silicon detectors is described and the main lessons learnt from the R&D phase are summarised. Presented at the 5th International Symposium on the Development and Application of Semiconductor Tracking Detectors, Hiroshima, June 14--17, 2004
