description Numerical simulations are a valuable tool when designing and characterizing particle telescopes. Simulation results can be used to improve the quality of experimental data analysis. In this work a Monte Carlo simulation code based on CERN tool GEANT 3.21 has been used to follow the SOHO/EPHIN instrument response to the detection of hydrogen and helium nuclei. Energy-dependent geometric factors and energy intervals of effective detection have been obtained separately for each isotope (/sup 1/H, /sup 2/H, /sup 3/He, and /sup 4/He). Energy measurement exactitude and incident directions have also been studied. (5 refs).
