Experiments with nuclear beams and targets

After a general introduction to the fundamental interst of studying high energy nucleus-nucleus collision, some specific signatures of quark-gluon plasma formation are considered from an experimental viewpoint. We then discuss the use of existing and new detectors for an experimental programme at the SPS.
