Sumario:A detailed account is given of a high statistics experiment measuring the reaction pi /sup -/p to pi /sup -/ pi /sup +/n at 17.2 GeV/c. The spark chamber and counter triggering system are described. The methods of data analysis are described, in particular the determination of angular distributions from apparatus with limited acceptance. Experimental data and their interpretation are presented.
