description A detailed analysis is presented of about 6000 events belonging to the final states p2 pi /sup +/3 pi /sup -/, p2 pi /sup +/3 pi /sup -/ pi /sup 0/ and n3 pi /sup +/3 pi /sup -/ produced in pi /sup -/p interactions at 3.93 GeV/c. The main features of the data are found to be well approximated by the predictions of relativistic phase-space, in spite of copious resonance production amounting to approximately 80% of the cross section. The resonance fractions are estimated from a maximum likelihood fit to the data using a phenomenological model describing the peripheral production of resonances and the symmetrization of the wave-function with respect to identical pions. A study is also made of two pion correlations. (17 refs).
