Sumario: | CERN's new accelerator, the 400 GeV synchrotron, now in the course of construction near Geneva has a magnetic guide field of heroic proportions-the magnet ring (0=2.2 km) straddles the French/Swiss border. In consequence the pulse excitation requirements are similarly elevated. It has been agreed that this new machine will be powered directly from the public supply without any form of intermediate energy storage-i.e. M-G sets. This supply method has been the subject of detailed theoretical investigations and system tests included a joint EDF/CEGB pulse test using the Cross-Channel link. (3 refs). |
