Some consequences of the KNO scaling law for charge multiplicity distributions

An analysis of (n)/D ratios for multiplicity distributions in pp scattering indicates that present data are consistent with the KNO prediction that this ratio should be a constant, if (n) and D are interpreted in terms of a continuous rather than a discrete distribution. description An analysis of (n)/D ratios for multiplicity distributions in pp scattering indicates that present data are consistent with the KNO prediction that this ratio should be a constant, if (n) and D are interpreted in terms of a continuous rather than a discrete distribution. Simple rules have been obtained for the modal value of the multiplicity distribution and for the peak fraction of the inelastic cross-section taken up by n-prong events. The fact that the rules are in agreement with available data on pp collisions provides fresh support to the validity of the KNO scaling law at presently accessible energies. (8 refs).
