Search for new neutron-rich nuclei produced by fast neutrons at LAMPF
The possibility of using fast neutrons to produce new neutron-rich nuclides is investigated. The neutrons were generated by spallation reactions of 800-MeV protons on a Cu beamstop. 'Effective cross sections' for the (n,2pn), (n,2p), and (n,3pn) reactions were measured as a function of tar...

Sumario: | The possibility of using fast neutrons to produce new neutron-rich nuclides is investigated. The neutrons were generated by spallation reactions of 800-MeV protons on a Cu beamstop. 'Effective cross sections' for the (n,2pn), (n,2p), and (n,3pn) reactions were measured as a function of target A. Results indicate the above cross sections to be large enough to be useful in searches for new nuclides outside of the fission region. Results from the decay studies of neutron-rich /sup 200/Pt and /sup 197/Ir are presented. (8 refs). |
