Sumario: | The insertion design of an e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring determines not only the physics potential of the facility but also the basic machine parameters, and considerable economies can be made by suitably tailoring the insertions to the detector requirements. This paper shows how the use of specialized insertions can improve the machine characteristics and discusses the solution adopted for LEP, the large e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage rings currently under study at CERN.
