High-energy behaviour of the average multiplicity

Sumario: | The authors study the properties of the average multiplicity. Their main result is that, assuming that the total cross-section does not decrease faster than any negative power of s, the average multiplicity can increase asymptotically at most as log s. Then it is clear that experimental evidence in favour of a faster increase of the average multiplicity would invalidate not just a model, but a whole rather general theoretical scheme. (6 refs). |
