Polarized targets at CERN

Reviews present understanding of a polarized target during dynamic polarization. Describes the construction and operation of a frozen spin target and a deuterated target, both cooled by a dilution refrigerator, and reports on the behaviour of polarized targets in high intensity beams based on experience with a /sup 3/He-cooled target in a strong proton beam.
