description The Isolde project, which involves production of nuclei of extreme neutron/proton ratio, using an isotope separator connected to a cyclotron, at CERN (Geneva) is described. The theory of nuclear stability and nuclear reactions is outlined. The scientific programme of the Isolde project includes identification of unknown nuclei, measurement of nuclear mass, spin and magnetic moment, optical and nuclear spectroscopy, effect of nuclear radius on energy of K X-ray radiation and a study of beta delayed particles and of radioactive targets for nuclear reaction experiments. In 1978, /sup 3/He ion beams of 900 MeV will be available, in addition to the proton beams, for the production of elements. A list of laboratories participating in the Isolde project is given. (0 refs).
