description | Reports on 23 emission-line galaxies and 22 quasars discovered spectroscopically from a selection of objects on two UK Schmidt objective prism plates. These fields have also been studied by Rodgers et al. (1978) from a list of unpublished compact galaxies discovered by Zwicky. A striking result is that only 2 galaxies out of the ones reported overlap with the objects discussed in their paper. The emission-line galaxies comprise an heterogeneous sample; among them the authors find luminous galaxies resembling Seyfert 2 but with narrow lines, one interacting galaxy, and blue galaxies with a wide range of H beta fluxes undergoing current star formation. The quasars were most of the time identified from their Ly alpha emission, their redshifts are 1.6<z<3.1. (10 refs). |
