Sumario:For protons, the only existing intersecting storage rings are those at CERN, which are used for research in high-energy physics. In these rings the proton current reaches 36 A at an energy of 26 GeV; the beam lifetime is measured in days. Since there is essentially no synchrotron radiation by the protons, the beam energy does not have to be replenished. It is interesting to consider whether this 'superconductivity' could be exploited for applications. A possibility is the technological problem of using proton storage ring to develop a high-power RF frequency converter. One specific problem would be to efficiently convert microwave power at a frequency of 300 MHz into microwave power at 3000 MHz. (5 refs).
