description | The general layout of the present CERN neutrino facility is described briefly. The fast ejected proton beam has been re-designed so as to provide separated function control on beam position, direction and profile at the target, and some new monitoring devices have been incorporated. This has greatly simplified operation and, together with other improvements in the system, has contributed to an increased and symmetrically distributed neutrino flux. These features are discussed and related to the design of the neutrino facility on the 400 GeV SPS accelerator. The higher energy and intensity raise considerable problems in the design of the target and local shielding; some possible solutions are proposed. (2 refs). |
