Investigation of glow discharge conditions for LEP vacuum chambers

For LEP (Large Electron Positron Storage Ring) the use of a discharge cleaning method to remove tightly bound adsorbed gas layers from the walls of the vacuum chamber is proposed. The present study investigates the problems of discharge stability and discharge current distribution over the surface of a long chamber. The influence of the special geometry with the anode outside the main chamber is discussed. (7 refs).
