description | The readout electronics of the LHCb outer tracker measures the drift time in the straw tubes, digitizes the time signal and stores it in a 160 word deep buffer. For a positive pre-trigger (L0) decision the drift time information is serialized and transmitted over optical fiber to a trigger and L1 buffer board. Here the data are de-serialized, checked, translated into spacial information and stored for a maximum of 60 ms. The level 1 trigger (L1) selected events are broadcasted to a PC farm with about 1000 CPUs. Because of the high interaction rate of 40 MHz and an occupancy of up to 10%, the electronics used in the irradiated area must be fast. Three radiation hard chips are used for the readout. The ASDBLR preamplifier amplifies and discriminates the charge pulse from the drift electrons. For the outer tracker the OTIS TDC was developed, it must measure drift times of 32 channels every 25 ns. The GOL chip is used for the data transmission via optical fiber. It serializes the data from four TDCs and feeds them at 1.6 Gbit/s into a radiation hard laser diode. This thesis describes how the components of the readout electronics were developed, combined to a readout chain and tested. |
