Sumario: | MANTIS is a commercial telemanipulator, bought from a US firm and further developed at CERN. It was intended for handling radioactive material at accelerators, targets and experimental areas. For its initial use at the PS, it was mounted under an overhead crane and here we see Roger Horne, the engineer in charge of this device, at its commands. Later it was used for handling hot components in Building 177; in the "neutrino cave" (the neutrino target in the SPS N-Area); briefly in the very hot target area of the Antiproton Accumulator. Retired to point 6 of the SPS, MANTIS is now in the show-business for visitors. |
