Networks for high-energy physics An interim report on wide-area communications

This document is an interim report by subgroup 5 of the ECFA working group on data processing standards. The working group is organised by E. Lillestol, University of Bergen, and E.M. Rimmer, CERN, Geneva; the Organiser of subgroup 5 (links and networks) is D.M. Sendall, CERN, Geneva. The names and addresses of members of the subgroup can be found in the Appendix to this report. The ECFA working group intends to have reports for all the subgroups available in machine-readable form at the CERN computer centre. However, it was felt that the distribution of "hard copies" without delay would be useful in making a larger number of physicists and computer centres aware of this work, and give them the opportunity to influence its future progress.
