Bootstraps and partons (a field guide to composite hadrons)

In a bootstrap theory of infinitely composite hadrons, it is shown that parton-like behaviour for inclusive reactions arises naturally. The question is raised: might the bootstrap be equivalent to theories with explicitly local entities, such as partons or currents, playing a fundamental role? The a...

Sumario:In a bootstrap theory of infinitely composite hadrons, it is shown that parton-like behaviour for inclusive reactions arises naturally. The question is raised: might the bootstrap be equivalent to theories with explicitly local entities, such as partons or currents, playing a fundamental role? The author suggests the answer is no, and point out several crucial experiments which will distinguish between the bootstrap and theories of composite hadrons with elementary constituents. (26 refs).
