description Experiment R606 (Aachen, CERN, Harvard, Munich, Northwestern, Riverside)installed in the specially constructed pit at intersection 6. It was designed to investigate production of new particles in the fragmentation and diffraction regions. Use was made of a toroidal field provided by 12 flat copper coils, seen here as the rays of a wheel; in the free spaces between coils are housed Cerenkov counters. These counters, together with calorimetric shower detectors, located behind the magnet, provide separation of electrons from hadrons. The momenta of particles going through the system are measured with two sets of three drift chambers, two in front of the magnet, one behind, whose size increases from 1.5 m for the one seen in the picture, to 5 m for the one on the back. On the right the thin- walled cylindrical vacuum chamber.
