After several seconds of precooling (in momentum and in the vertical plane), the shutter was opened briefly, so that by means of RF the precooled antiprotons could be transferred to the stack tail, where they were subjected to further cooling in momentum and both transverse planes. The fast shutter, which had to open and close in a fraction of a second, was an essential item of the cooling scheme and a mechanical masterpiece. See also 7910267, 8002234.
