Sumario:The physics results described in this book are made possible by the excellent performances of the LHC machine (see Chap. 2) and thefour main detectors ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb. These experiments are the most complex and advanced detectors for particle physics ever built. The planning and detector R&D; started in the late 1980s. The actual construction and installation took place between 2000 and 2008 and involved thousands of scientists, engineers and technicians. This chapter will give an overview of the main design features of the experiments as well as a summary of key performance indicators.
