description Results of a Monte Carlo study of upsilon family production in p-Pb and Pb-pcollisions at the LHC and its detection in the muon spectrometer of the ALICEdetector are presented. The study was done on the basis of the fast simulationmethod developed within the ALICE simulation and reconstruction frameworkAliRoot. In this method, the expected efficiency, momentum and mass resolutionof the spectrometer have been taken into account for smearing the generatedparticle parameters in the muon spectrometer acceptance. The upsilon productionhas been simulated using the Pt and rapidity parameterization for theresonances. Secondary interactions and decays of bottom quarks are the mainsources of background. The simulation of the background, i.e. the bottom quarkpair production has been carried out by the Pythia generator. The merging of thebackground and signal was done with weights proportional to correspondingproduction cross sections. The signal to background ratio and significance havebeen estimated for each member of upsilon family for the collider runningscenario. The Bjorken variable x distributions for the target and projectile arepresented. A good separation between the signal and background is demonstrated.
